Spanish Hacienda Style

Last month I was lucky enough to take a vacation away from everything and go to Capella Pedregal in Mexico for some gorgeous warm weather. This resort is really a stunning example of Spanish Hacienda style both in the interior design as well as the landscape architecture.

The headboards are made out of a beautiful embossed leather with lime green accented bedding. Check out a close up of the detail work on the leather below.

I love all of the bright ceramic planters filled with cacti and the rustic hand-carved wooden bench.

I wish that I had an extra suitcase to fill up with these hand blown glass hearts. They are used sporadically throughout the resort but really symbolize the tranquility of the place and make a great take home souvenir.

For Sale: Sex and the City Apartment

The iconic TV character Carrie Bradshaw lived in a dreamy brownstone apartment supposedly on the Upper East side, although the real life apartment is in West Village. For $9.6 million you can live in a piece of Sex and the City. Apparently it sold last November for $9 million, so despite a stagnant market these owners want a profit. Perhaps this profit is deserved for dealing with the hoards of female tourists who stop all day long to take photos in front of the famous doorstep.

Today is National Pancake Day and so I have to share my favorite pancake recipe from a brunch place in Berkeley that is near and dear to me, La Note

Gingerbread Pancakes
Ingredients

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup brewed coffee, cold or at room temperature
4 large eggs
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
Vegetable oil for brushing griddle
Maple Syrup and Powdered Sugar for serving
Instructions
Whisk together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices in a bowl. Whisk together water, coffee, eggs, butter, and lemon juice in a large bowl. Add flour mixture and whisk until just combined. Let stand 15 minutes (batter will thicken).
Brush a griddle or 12-inch nonstick skillet with oil and heat over moderate heat until hot but not smoking.
Working in batches of 3 or 4, pour 1/4 cup batter per pancake onto hot griddle and cook until bubbles appear on surface and undersides are lightly browned, 1 to 2 minutes. Flip pancakes with a spatula and cook until cooked through and edges are lightly browned, 1 to 2 minutes more. Transfer to a platter and loosely cover with foil to keep warm. Brush griddle with oil between batches.

I picked up the HGTV magazine last week for something new to read while traveling, and I actually found myself reading the entire mag cover to cover. For someone who doesn't watch HGTV, I found this to be quite a feat! There is a survey in the latest issue that tests how handy you are around the house and apparently I must keep candy in my toolbox. This made me feel really inept as a designer, but upon further study of the quiz I found that many of the questions involve home problems unique to cold weather climates and things that don't affect apartment dwellers. Being a 3rd generation Southern California girl I am not surprised to find out that I don't know how to avoid freezing pipes. Also, where should you store your propane tank in the winter? In California we use it year round of course! One thing I did know being from California is that a homeowner's policy will not cover earthquake damage, but it will cover tornadoes. All of these things are just part of being an adult and learning how to deal with shelter problems throughout your entire life.

I recently worked on a master bedroom and we selected a gorgeous deep navy blue color for the walls. To add some brightness we framed one of the owner's Hermes scarves that was predominantly hot pink. The contrast of the two colors is really fun to work with.

Ted Baker Design

Every time I go into a Ted Baker store I am always in love with elements of his shop design. Colorful, whimsical, and often easy to re-create for the home his stores are inspirational and he could easily transition his fashion style into home design. He could pull a reverse Kelly Wearstler and open a home store.

When you look really closely at the lighting in the shop you realize that this could be re-created with multiple plain pendant lights that can be found at IKEA.

Another great trick is to pair up glassware by color. I love the look of this collection of emerald green glass against the soft pale turquoise tufted velvet backdrop.

As I was trolling the design blogs last night, the same ad for Cottonelle kept popping up. Alongside a roll of the toilet paper appeared the familiar face of Jonathan Adler promoting his designed toilet paper roll holders for Cottonelle. Seriously? I don't blame JA, since every designer needs to make money and licensing is a dream job. However, I just can't imagine the allure in one of these paper tp covers? Who really leaves their toilet paper out in plain sight and then thinks that dressing it up will enhance the look? Sorry but I will not be "respecting the roll" as Cottonelle wants buyers to do.

While out Christmas shopping in Covent Garden, we stumbled upon Jamie Oliver's newest restaurant, Union Jacks. It seems as if he is opening a new restaurant every week in London these days, so expectations weren't that high, but the interior decor is fun and has an American diner sort of feel. The menu is all flatbreads with very British ingredients. We got a great seat at the bar overlooking the kitchen prep area, but the best part of our dinner was seeing Jamie Oliver dining there himself!

A tree adventure in London

This year we were determined to get a real tree for our flat in London since we are here for most of December. I even shipped over a ton of silver and mercury glass ornaments.

First Stop: Columbia Road Flower Market about a mile from our house, my fiance had full intentions of carrying our tree home over his shoulder. I had full intentions of claiming the largest tree on the lot. These two thoughts didn't mix well. I set my sights on a tree to which the salesman yelled out to everyone on the block that I picked the largest tree on the lot, I then relented and decided maybe that a 9' tree wasn't the best idea, but I had lots of ornaments and still needed a lot of tree real estate to handle the large baubles. So we settled on a full 7 1/2 ft. tree and luckily I was able to flag down a taxi and with the top hanging out of the side window we made it home in a few minutes.

On to the decorations...

The hardest part about decorating a tree in England is the lights are different from the U.S. and it isn't just the voltage. In the U.S. it seems all of the lights hook together so you can have endless amounts of lights on the tree plugged into one socket. Here every strand ends and they don't connect together, I was lucky to find one strand of 200 lights and it covered the whole tree.

The drum table is a versatile piece of furniture that can work well both indoors and outdoors. I have a roundup of some of my favorite drum tables for putting your cocktail on and kicking up your feet during the necessary R&R required after the rush of the holiday season.

Antique instruments are becoming popular for use as objects of decoration in the home. They are great for someone who might have once played an instrument as a child and wants to display something that is personal but can still be admired by those not aware of the personal attributes of the object.

The countdown is on until Thanksgiving tomorrow and if you are in need of a quick and simple centerpiece here is my idea for this year. I took some kraft paper and created a simple runner that will be a cinch to clean up afterwords, no laundering necessary! Then I spray painted some mason jars gold to use as vases and to keep with the simple down to earth theme of my Thanksgiving. I found these branches of golden apples at my local market and filled the mason jars with large white amaryllis. My table for tomorrow is complete!

I just finished a kitchen that the client wanted a pop of color and instead of something over the top that she would grow tired of very quickly, we opted to use the kitchen island for the necessary punch of color. With the costly stone and tile all in neutrals, any color would have worked, however the client had a great turquoise for her front door that we decided to bring into the kitchen to unify the different areas of the home.

I turned my Sunday night chili into a fun DIY project by re-purposing the empty ingredient cans as vases with a little spray paint magic!

Step 1: Accumulate various sizes of tin cans by cooking something delicious!

Step 2: After cleaning out the cans and peeling off the labels using warm water and goo be gone, set up a mini spray booth and get to work painting all of the cans! I selected a matte white paint for my project, but any color would look great.

Step 3: Group your vases together for a gorg centerpiece or use them in the kitchen as herb garden vessels. The uses are endless for these cheap and chic cans.

The reclaimed wood floors and brick work remind you that you are not sipping your latte in a cookie cutter Starbucks. While browsing the dining room section of Liberty over the weekend, I discovered a really cool British artist named Andrew Tanner. I have never seen designs like his done in dinnerware and his edgy creations are not mainstream in the U.S. My favorite and the least practical are his bone china plates with silhouettes cut out of them. I seem to be having a real obsession with silhouettes lately! I'm also not usually a fan of the color blue, but he takes old classic china motifs in blue and recreates them with a modern twist.

London Cocktail Week

Last night kicked off London Cocktail Week and I checked out the latest in cocktail creations as well as bar design in the East End.
1st stop: Chiswell Street Dining Rooms, which recently took over and remodeled an old dingy pub and turned it into a classy gastropub. Their drink of choice was a refreshing gin based drink.

2nd Stop: The Drift, a new bar in the corporate City district. I loved the design of this place and their cocktail of the night was a rum and espresso concoction that I couldn't get enough of! The bar has a back wall painted with chalkboard paint with great illustrations and lots of white pottery stacked up against the wall. The backsplash is made up of beveled mirrored subway tiles that really bring sparkle to the down to earth chalkboard style. The paper and wire chandeliers are also to die for!

3rd Stop: The Zetter Townhouse, one of my local favorites that opened last Spring and the decor is best described as your crazy aunt's house. If you have a fear of taxidermy, this is not the place for you, but everything is done in a really playful way. A mixture of old British furniture, Chinese foo dogs and patterned wallpaper make up this cozy space. Their drink of choice for the night was the Townhouse Tonic served in individual bottles that are adorable.

I can't seem to get enough of kraft paper and burlap these days. It is such a great neutral at an even better price. You can even go higher end with gorgeous linens in natural colors too.

1. Can't wait to get some more of the retired Domino Magazine style in book form with The Perfectly Imperfect Home being released November 1.
2. Also being released November 1st is Celerie Kemble's Black and White and I just adore the cover!
3. Design Sponge, the blog that really got me into interior design years ago, is now available in coffee table form. A must for any designer's library.
4. Diana Vreeland: The Eye has to Travel is a documentary that debuted at the Telluride film festival and was my favorite documentary, so I have been eagerly awaiting its release in book form which is now available.
5. Christian Louboutin is everywhere these days and if you can't afford a pair of his shoes, your closet can now house a retrospective of his work in paper form due out at the end of the month.

Donating Furniture

Shopping for new furniture and accessories is a lot of fun, but in order to avoid being on hoarders clearing out the old is a necessity. While leaving your old sofa on the street is one way to handle the situation, there are some ways to avoid trashing the old and helping out people in need who could really use some of your gently used items that may just be out of style. Here is a list of some great ways to lend a hand.

Most cities have local thrift shops working toward a local charity and these are a great way to keep your charity within your own community. I would definitely check these out first for small goods especially since many people disagree with the politics behind some of the large chains mentioned below.

Goodwill: Great to ditch any old thing without judgement. It really is amazing what they will take. They are nationwide and easy to find which is great if you move to a new city.

Salvation Army: Similar drop off services to goodwill, and the offer a pick-up service; but they can be quite picky with the furniture they choose to pick up.

Habitat for Humanity: During a home renovation, Habitat is the best way to recycle appliances, building materials, cabinetry, etc. They are a great resource and will help save you a bundle on dumpster fees.

If charities are too picky to take your items, no doubt there is someone out there who will take it off of your hands through Freecycle.

Last but not least a selfish reason to donate is the tax write-off, so don't forget to take a tax receipt with you when you donate.

Painted Lady Revival

I love the Victorian architecture of San Francisco's hilly terrain, and I had to share this building spotted in the tony neighborhood of Noe Valley. The term Painted Ladies came to fruition in the 1970's when houses in the Victorian style were painted in three or more colors to highlight their architectural details. I think that this is a bolder and more modern take on the Painted Ladies style from the 1970's. I love the green doors, but could probably do without the hot pink steps. This takes me back to when I first took at interest in interior design as a child. My mom and I selected a Victorian era dollhouse and I of course elected to paint it in my favorite colors of deep purple, lavender, pink, and emerald green. The house was complete with wood floors, molding, and wallpaper. If only I could find some photos of it, those would be priceless.

Cocktails in Kensington

Last week I had the pleasure of joining some friends at a cocktail masterclass with the master bartender from the Aubrey bar at the Kensington hotel. Surrounded by luxury including some gorgeous chandeliers from Ochre in the Aubrey bar, we learned how to pour, mix, and garnish the perfect cocktail. It was a great way to get together with some girlfriends and learn a new trick or two. A big thanks goes out to American Girl in Chelsea for giving away this class at her last event and my friend Nen for being the lucky winner!

Check out the elaborate bar setup, I am in need of some basic glass bottles and pour spouts after learning the proper amount for a pour.

Shopping in the Wine Country

I attended a gorgeous wedding in the quaint wine country town of Healdsburg a few weeks ago and got to enjoy a bit of shopping on a beautiful Fall day in Sonoma County. I discovered this great interiors shop named Limestone (so fitting for this rustic California locale). Of course being centered in the wine country, the shop is thoroughly stocked with kitchen ware and all things for the home that relates to food, but the shop also embraces the outdoor living lifestyle California is famous for.
